This line of acrylic paintings is the artist, Michael G. Booth’s original creative concept composed of a number of canvases arranged, attached, and simultaneously painted into intriguing landscapes of Glacier National Park.
These canvas-assemblages consist of two primary opposing painting styles. A controlled, tight realistic style merged with a free-and-loose emotional style has established a powerful impression of nature and atmosphere. The center area of the composition is highly detailed in objective-accuracy and emphasizes the focal images of wildlife. The exterior perimeter is painted in deliberate rhythmic swished paint-strokes, creating an intense feeling to the essence of the energetic mountainous scene.
This ongoing series is one of the artist’s favorites, due to the challenges it presents in achieving skillful and academic sound composition achievement. Blending the design concepts of two-dimensional painting with three-dimensional wall sculpture in using two-inch thick canvases and their placement (as a sculptural painting) is the intention.
Expressionistic-Realism is the name coined by the artist to describe his own developed style for this art. The contemporary style of Expressionism involves the application of loose paint strokes and drips to create emotion or mood that’s seen in the surroundings areas. The finite control of the paint in the center area presents a real appearance to the scene, the modern technique of expressionism blends nicely with the traditional technique of realism. The outcome of these two confrontational styles to unify creates a highly-charged landscape painting that potentially moves the viewer with the same inspiration emotion felt by the artist.
With the black-and-white assemblages, sometimes Michael paints a blue iridescent glaze over the water and sky, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere to the piece.
Michael writes his inspiration for each painting and attaches it to the back of the canvas-assemblage and in his book, “Glacier National Park, through the eyes of artist, Michael Booth.”
“Moose in Lake 1”
“This piece is a combination of a two-dimensional painting, coupled with a slight three-dimensional wall hanging sculpture. It is my own original concept with my original painting style. The highly inspiring atmosphere and mood of Glacier National Park is interpreted with loosely applied and splashed paint in an abstract-expressionistic technique around the perimeter of the accurate representation within the central area of the composition. An iconic animal of Glacier, the moose, stands in the iridescent water with the high mountains skirting the horizon. I created this art in black and white to emphasize the contrast of values in an interesting patterned design. I consider this a real work of art, truly an original.”

“Pack-String and Mount Gould”
Artist’s statement:
“Of all the art work I have created, this piece would rank as one of my favorites. The scene itself is one of the most magnificent beautiful features of Glacier National Park. This painted serene setting displays the high majestic granite mountains and, at center stage, Mount Gould. A coniferous forest surrounds the incredible lake and at the very foreground a pack string of horses becomes the focal point in the painting. I have a personal connection with packing horses in the wilderness and this association makes the imagery exciting to me.”
